International offer of lectures & courses by Willem Blok

Netherlands, September 2007 - This brochure contains an overview of lectures & courses, developed and carried out in the framework of international exchange and transfer. Drs. Willem M.J. Blok is educated as sociologist, social worker and manager. He is senior lecturer at NHL university of applied sciences in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. He is involved in international work since 1992, a.o. in Poland as project developer and - manager and as senior lecturer at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. Lectures & courses are given in English language. They are illustrated with Power Point (see-and-hear principle) and, if wanted so, with handouts. They refer to both theory & practice. There is interaction with the audience and, if suitable, there is an exercise. The lectures take 1.5 - 2 hours with translation, or 1 - 1.5 hours without translation in the native language. For the courses: see there. The number of participants is minimal 15. There is no maximum. Necessary facilities are: white screen, white- or blackboard, a beamer and sometimes video equipment. Target groups are students (social work, sociology, pedagogy etc.), social workers, teachers, managers and policy makers.

1. Basics of Social Work I - Description, explanation and illustration of basic tasks, functions and meaning of modern professional social work. Developed for 1st & 2nd year students.

 

2. Basics of Social Work II – Continuation and

deepening of part I

 

3. Basics of Community Work - Description, explanation and illustration of basic tasks, functions and meaning of community work.

 

4. Methods in Social Work I - All professional work is done in a methodical way. The core of Social Work expertise is analyzing and solving psychosocial problems. Interventions in a change process are made in interaction with the client(s), are based upon values and are performed in a societal framework. The lecture offers an introduction, based on an integrated approach and referring to practice.

 

5. Methods in Social Work II – Continuation and deepening of part I

 

6. Social Work in a Democratic Society - The position and functions of social work in society are described and analyzed with the help of a socio-political frame work (article in English will be published soon).

 

7. Local Community Development - The position and contribution of social work in local community development is analyzed with the help of a system-, actor- & policy-approach.

 

8. Think Global, act local! – Toward modernization of social work in transforming societies

Social Work is an International profession, that fits in a modern, western type of society. Modern professional Social Work is needed to solve social problems, support citizens and stimulate societal democracy.

 

9. Three of a kind: Local Social Policy, Citizen Participation & Social Work - Local social policy is needed to steer social developments and to prevent and solve social problems. The development and implementation of local social policy should be done in a democratic way, so in cooperation with citizen groups and NGO’s. This is necessary to gain a broad social base, public support and to guarantee success. It belongs to the tasks of modern professional social work to stimulate and support the development and implementation of local social policy.

 

10. Social Innovation & Social Work - Lecture or seminar on the concept of social innovation, the implementation in care & welfare and the implications for social work. The topic is subject of ongoing research and education and is based on current practice in Poland. See: http://sic.to

 

11. Polderwelfare: Market Mechanisms in Care & Welfare – Critical overview and review of current trends in care & welfare in The Netherlands, more or

13. A Social Portrait of The Netherlands - Offers a basic impression of the lowlands to a medial & higher educated audience. It is done from a social point of view, with open eye for everyday life and with the help of artistic impressions. The way it is done, allows comparison with the own country.

 

14. Social Work Behind the Dikes: history of Social Work in The Netherlands - Described along historical lines and from a sociological point of view. The way it is done, allows comparison with the own country.

 

15. The Dutch Welfare State: history, outlook, problems & solutions - Description and critical evaluation.

 

16. Vandalism - A basic introduction to this social

problem, illustrated with a video. 

 

17. Career Guidance – Brief general introduction with examples from Great Britain. With cases for subgroups, and plenary presentations.

 

Courses

 

A. The Network Approach - This is a method to get (more) aware of, and get grip on the own position in the external field of forces around a concrete social issue or target. The method is taught and carried out in 14 steps. Goal of the course is to learn the Network approach, to practice it and to reflect on results. The course exists out of three sessions from each 2.5 hours, with homework (two tasks) in between. Material is included (available in English, Polish and Dutch). Participants need to have (some) practical experience.

 

B. Social Work & Social Policy in the Netherlands

A broad introduction to the history, the current state of affairs and the prospects of social work and social policy in the lowlands. Varies from three to five lessons.

E. Methods & product development for social professions – Methods in social work are based on values and standards. They are the result of trial and error processes in practice and systematic theoretical reflections on it. Methods & product development is a process that can be organized and managed in an efficient and effective way. A basis introduction can be given in the form of a lecture or a seminar.
