The Netherlands Today
A Social Portrait of the Lowlands The little country at the North Sea is a modern, wealthy country, influenced by and playing its role in the ongoing globalization process in the world. The Netherlands have the highest population density of the Western World. While the struggle against the sea goes on, the Dutchmen go on developing and implementing solutions for the problems connected with it. After World War II the country build its Welfare State, with social security and opportunities for all citizens, regardless social class or group. Today, the Welfare State is under political pressure, not only in The Netherlands but in all Western countries. There is a growing individualization in society, with its dark and bright sides. The Netherlands were, and still are, an emigration country. But in the last 35 years it became an immigration country as well, especially for people from Turkey and Morocco. This means a cultural enrichment at one hand, but also problems at the other hand. Many migrants live concentrated in urban areas and keep most of their own culture and lifestyle. The Islam is the 3rd religion after the Protestant and Roman-Catholic church. The presentation includes an illustrated lecture, questions and discussion, and singing . The lecture offers a basic impression of the lowlands today. It is done from a social point of view, with open eye for everyday life and with the help of artistic impressions. The way it is done, allows comparison with the own country. Marja Blok-Goudberg and her sister Irene will teach the audience a Dutch song. Dutch-Canadians are warmly invited to come forward and sing with us and the audience their favorite “liedje”. --- |
