Programme

08.45: Welcome and Opening - By

Lykele Feenstra, president of the Erasmus Students Network in Leeuwarden and by a NHL representative.

08.55: The Netherlands: Social work International – Willem Blok, lecturer

NHL Welfare Studies

--- In a brief lecture I will explain why Social Work is an international profession, practiced in national settings, dealing with both national and international social problems.

09.20: Portugal: Media, social problems and public opinion - Andreia Félix, Bruno Coelho, Joana Marques and Susana Martins, 3rd year Communication students from Escola Superior de Educacao in Setubal.

--- We are interested in how mass media deal with  social problems and how that influences public opinion in Portugal and The Netherlands. After an introduction to the Portuguese media, we present an overview of social problems in The Netherlands and in Portugal. Our objective is to make Dutch students think about this issue and to stimulate discussion. At the same time we'll give examples about the Portuguese and Dutch realities. We are trying to arrange an interview with the chief editor of the "Leeuwarder Courant" in our effort to find good examples about the way Dutch media deal with social problems.

10.05: Poland: Social work with prisoners - Marek Poniedziatek and Monika Frackowiak, 4th year Pedagogy & 5th year Sociology students of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan.

--- After an introduction to social work in Poland, we will describe the situation and problems of prisoners in Poland. We will tell how they are stimulated to go back to normal life. We appreciate to compare the Polish with the Dutch situation.

10.30: coffee break

10.45: Ghana: Working with street children - Antsy Hogenhuis, 3rd year student NHL Welfare studies. She just returned from a half year stay in Ghana.

--- After some general information about Ghana I tell about working with street children in Accra, the capital city. After that I show a video about CAS, The Catholic Action for Street children. I like to explain some differences between social work in Ghana and the Netherlands. I end up telling something about my experiences with living in a “Third World” country.

11.15: Finland: Youth work Heli Ingman, Hanna Lyytikäinen and Laura Einio, 3rd year students of the Mikkeli Polytechnic School of Culture and Youth work in Mikkeli.

--- We will introduce youth work in Finland: structures, administration and financing. We inform about the practical work and the working methods in the field of youth work. We describe the social problems in Finland amongst young people, like social exclusion, that causes drugs abuse and unemployment. The instability in life is a current issue that also affects many youngsters. We would like the Dutch students to compare between Finland and The Netherlands and to discuss about differences and similarities.

12.00: Conclusions and ending (-12.10)
